The Cookie Song: An Orff Music Lesson & Game (Can accompany “The Doorbell Rang")
I don’t know about you, but I am always looking for ways to get my students up and moving within a class period. If you’re like me, then keep reading. This elementary music Orff activity is designed to be used with or without the book The Doorbell Rang by Pat Hutchins.
It includes instructions on how to incorporate “The Cookie Song” and cookie rhythms into the story, as well as a game (with two versions) to reinforce learning and get your students accompanying the song on instruments (Orff, Recorder, Ukulele…).
From doorbell sounds (“ding dong”) on metallophones, to flourishes on the glockenspiel, to a broken bordun, to full xylophone accompaniment, this game will get your students up and moving, reading and matching rhythms, and singing and playing instruments.
Like many of my products, this lesson plan is designed with versatility, extensions, and differentiation built in. This product is a must have for any music teacher seeking to infuse excitement and interactive learning in their classroom.
What’s included:
Clear directions for several different ways to implement the lesson
“The Cookie Song” broken down over several pages (largest part chunked by measures, full song, individual instrumental accompaniments)
Game Cards:
Chocolate Chip Cookie printouts (the top of the cookie)
12 Cookie rhythms (the bottom of the cookie)
12 Cookie rhythms (types and rhythms–ex: “Or-e-o” written out with rhythm above name)
12 Cookie rhythms (type only–ex: “Or-e-o”)
3 pages of blank reproducibles (cookie tops, circles for students to write their own cookie rhythms–circles & rectangles)
The game and song are designed to keep your students active and engaged, while also reinforcing key music concepts like rhythm, melody, and instrumentation. The included reproducibles and blank cards allow you to customize the activity to fit your specific needs and class size. This is a perfect resource for music teachers looking for a fun, interactive and engaging way to teach music.
