Roll a Rhythm
I am so excited about this new product line! I have been trying to create activities that are geared towards centers and this one fits the bill. It’s a low-prep activity with little setup/cleanup and it’s a guaranteed crowd pleaser.
Here’s how it works:
Give each student/group a die
Taking turns, they roll and then play the rhythm that matches the number on their die.
They can play their rhythm using body percussion, on non-pitched instruments, Orff instruments set up in a pentatonic scale, a specific note on recorder…sky’s the limit!
You can leave it there OR extend with the composition & notation pages where students to create their own four measure piece. They roll the die four times and notate the matching rhythm(s).
Once they have their four-measure piece they can practice and perform their piece!
I have created Level One (quarter & eighth notes + quarter rest) and Level Two (half, quarter & eighth notes + quarter rest) versions for you to differentiate, use with multiple grades or level up.
Each level includes:
Four different roll a rhythm pages with quarter, half and eighth notes + quarter rest
Two roll a rhythm composition pages
I’m telling you: this activity is a blast! It’s an engaging, hands-on way for students to develop and strengthen their musical skills. It’s a must-have resource for every elementary music teacher! Go check them out!
