Play Ball! Teach the Note Names in Treble Clef
It’s finally spring (and starting to feel like it) and my kiddos are all about spring training and gearing up for baseball season. So, in an effort to connect what we’re doing in class to topics they’re naturally curious and excited about, I created this “Play Ball” Treble Clef Note Name activity.
Here’s the deal: there are 12 cards & each has a baseball glove + note on the staff printed on it; there is a separate page of baseballs with each note name on the baseball. You could use this as a centers rotation or for whole-class instruction. It’s simple and is also a great activity to leave with a sub.
Whole Class Instruction
Print a packet for each student
Have students cut out the baseballs and glue/tape them to the baseball glove with the matching note (Middle C-High G)
At the end, they have a collection of “Baseball Cards” to take home
Centers
Print a single copy of the cards and baseballs (I always try to print on cardstock and in color and then laminate for centers activities so they last longer)
If you have velcro stickers (circles, preferably), attach one side to the cards/glove and the other to the baseball
Have students play it as a matching game to reinforce treble clef note names
Either way
If you want to extend, have them play the notes on a pitched instrument (xylophone, ukulele, recorder, etc.)—this could be a separate centers rotation (you could make an extra copy of the components)
There’s even a “Play Ball” coloring page for quiet work or early finishers (or another centers rotation, if you’re looking for a quiet activity)
It’s a great way for you to assess their understanding of note names in treble clef
