Garden Compositions

Well, I don’t know about you, but my spring has been a whirlwind! When things get busy like this, I like to have some print and go activities at my fingertips. So, just in time for planting season, I bring you: Garden Compositions!

With this packet, you will be able to nurture your students' creativity while also reinforcing essential rhythmic skills. This resource is full of engaging activities that will have your students composing their own, garden themed musical masterpieces!

It’s no-prep, print-and-go and caters to a variety of learning styles. Here's what makes it a winner for both teachers and students:

  • Sprouting Creativity: Students get to unleash their inner composer by creating their own 16-beat garden-themed pieces. As they work, they'll be actively practicing reading and notating rhythms with quarter notes, quarter rests, and even beamed eighth notes!

  • Engaging Practice: Forget boring worksheets! This hands-on activity keeps students actively involved while they develop their rhythmic skills. The best part? You can seamlessly assess their progress without taking away from the fun.

  • Substitute Superhero: We've all been there – the dreaded sub day! This packet is your secret weapon. Clear instructions and a variety of activities make it a breeze for substitutes or unexpected absences, ensuring your students have a productive and enjoyable music class.

What's Included in the Garden-Themed Composition Packet:

  • Differentiated Cut & Paste Rhythms: Two versions (images only and words + rhythms) provide 16 rhythm patterns with corresponding garden words/phrases (using quarter notes, rests, and beamed eighths) for students to assemble.

  • Composition Page: Students use their chosen rhythms to create a unique 8-measure (16-beat) garden composition.

  • Decode the Rhythm: 16 garden words with space for students to determine the corresponding rhythm (includes an example).

  • Guided Word Bank Composition: Another composition page with a word bank at the bottom allows students to practice notation and create a new piece.

The Fun Doesn't Stop There!

This versatile packet is bursting with suggestions for extension activities to take the learning even further:

  • Body Percussion & Instrument Exploration: Students translate their compositions into body percussion, then move on to unpitched percussion and finally Orff instruments for melodic improvisation practice using pentatonic scales.

  • Composition Sharing & Collaboration: Students can perform their unique creations for a class concert or explore playing each other's compositions in centers.

  • Storytelling with Ostinati: Layer student compositions as ostinati to create a musical backdrop for a springtime narrative.

  • Take it Home! Students can transform their compositions into decorated packets to share and perform for family and friends.

This Garden-Themed Composition Packet is more than just a classroom activity – it's a springboard for creativity, musical growth, and pure enjoyment!
